Two local groups have joined forces to organise a city event which will highlight the prevalence and impact of domestic violence on women and children. The issue affects one in five women in Ireland.

Mayo Women’s Support Services has presented shocking statistics which show that domestic violence across Ireland and in Mayo is a daily threat for women of all ages and at all life stages.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD said that he was “one for reality and the truth” when he made a commitment to meet the challenge of the enormous problem of domestic violence in Mayo and Ireland.

Mayo Women’s Support Service (MWSS) are currently taking part in a nationwide campaign which was initiated by SAFE Ireland and launched by Ryan Tubridy in November 2012. A domestic violence response group, set up to tackle the problem in Connemara, is urging people to join with activists around the world in the One Billion Rising, the largest day of action planned to highlight the need to end violence against women and girls.
